EARLY CHURCH HISTORY

Rev. RABEL came from Omaha and rode to various homes. A pastor also came from Chadron. The members were baptized in the Niobrara river. John SCHULZ Sr. was responsible for starting this first church, having lived in and near Omaha, where he was employed in a packing plant; where the church had been established. The native German language was still used by the emigrants, and some of the minutes found in the records are written in German. The SCHULZ

home is approximately six miles south of Nenzel, NE. John SCHULZ filed on his homestead around 1900, and this was when the church began. The other members also lived in that area.

Some of this information came from Martha SCHULZ BENDSTAN who was about 19 years old at the time of the reorganization, and from the families of Esther SCHULZ BLISS and Charley SCHULZ. The latter two were born at this time or lived at home when the John SCHULZ family lived in and near Omaha before coming to Cherry County to homestead.

HISTORY OF FARWELL, NE from Sherman Dam Dedication, June  1963 Howard, Co.

Farwell is located in  Posen Precinct in Howard County. Early in 1887 the town of Posen (now Farwell) began. In 1887 the Burlington RR built through Farwell. Mr. BURNS was the line's first agent.

In 1892 the school was completed and Dist.  67 was formed, a Mr. DEHAYS was the first teacher. School board: Chas. C. DOBRY, James LAND &  Fred OLSEN. The Village of Farwell was incorporated in 1895 and the post office & depot were named Farwell. However business conducted by the Village Bd. used the name "Posen", which caused confusion as to the correct name, and as a result in 1951 a petition was filed in Dist.  Court requesting the name be designated as Farweil.

First Village Bd. James LANG, Mayor; Chas  C. DOBRY, Clerk; Ed LORKOWSKI, Treas.; Hugh HARVEY & John HOFSETH, members.

St. Anthony Catholic  Church was organized in 1877 about 2 mile south of Farwell, in 1924 it was moved to Farwell. In 1925 a parochial school was built under supervision of Rev. Joseph HINZSMANN. Farwell Lutheran Church was built  in 1898, 1st minister was Rev. J. C. PETERSEN.

RETURN OF BIBLE

This is the story of a bible of Hanford Nelson SMITH, which was given to him by his wife probably at the time they were married during the Civil War.

Hanford Nelson SMITH was born in Thompkins County, N. Y. 7 August 1832 and died 9 March 1916 in St. Paul, NE. He served the 14th Wisconsin Inf. Reg. While on leave he was married in Thompkins Co. N.Y. to Harriett GARRISON about Dec 1863.

His wife gave him a bible, which was lost, along with other possessions about 1864 or 1865. Some how it fell into the hands of James Riley WHITE, who died in 1868. Later it was given to a niece of Mr. WHITE's and an account was published in the Louisville Courier-Journal, a Ky paper on 1 March 1913. The account included the record of bith (sic) and deaths and names recorded in the bible. A brother-in-law of Mr. SMITH, Jas. N. ROGERS of Indiana, saw the article in the paper and recognized the Bible inscriptions and so the bible was returned to Mr. SMITH after some 48 or so years.

Entry on the fly leaf is : "Hanford and Hattie are forever separated by curel war. Hanford N. SMITH from Hattie
